He wished to pursue his studies further and decided to enrol at Stanford University to complete his MBA. It was during this time that the then Indira Gandhi government privatised polyester filament yarn manufacturing. Up until then, Reliance was centred on textiles. Dhirubhai Ambani finally pulled Mukesh out of business school to help the transition from textiles to PFY manufacturing and his joining sparked the growth of the company by leaps.
Mukesh Ambani spearheaded the foray of Reliance Industries into the petrochemical world which turned out to be a very successful move. He was also responsible for the development of Reliance Communications Limited which is now headed by his younger brother Anil Ambani. Mukesh also was the driving force behind the creation of the world’s largest petroleum refinery at Jamnagar in India. Among the two brothers, Mukesh is known to have been the major force behind the diversification and global expansion plan of Reliance.
After Dhirubhai Ambani’s death in 2002, the brothers assumed joint control of Reliance Industries. Feuds soon broke out between the two which prompted their mother to split the assets of Reliance such that Mukesh now retained control of the Reliance gas, oil and petrochemical units. In 2006, Mukesh Ambani was chosen to chair the World Economic Forum. In 2007, he became India’s first rupee trillionaire.
